Tobago Oil Catastrophe

An overturned barge began leaking fuel off the coast of Tobago, and authorities say it could have begun leaking as early as February 3rd. The oil spill currently has a perimeter around it (using special tools) to prevent/slow further progress of the oil. However, the fuel continues to leak from the boat and authorities currently don’t know how much fuel is in the barge itself. Cleanup costs are expected to be high, but until the situation is sufficiently under control, the focus is less on restoration. The situation was deemed a national emergency by officials on February 11th, and as of February 26th, the spill has also now reached the island of Bonaire.
