On Wednesday, March 13, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill forcing TikTok’s Chinese owner, a company called ByteDance, to either sell its stake in TikTok or have it shut down within the country. Although the House passed the bill, that doesn’t mean that it is law! The Senate must also pass the bill, and the President, Joe Biden, must sign the bill. It is uncertain whether these two things will happen. The House passed this bill due to concerns that the Chinese government is stealing data from US users, which is, as of right now, an unfounded claim.
