Student Loan Relief

This past Wednesday, the Biden Administration announced that they will be allocating an additional $7.7 billion in student debt relief towards 160,000 students. This total works out to about $48,000 per student, providing much-needed aid to students across the country. In total, the administration has provided $167 billion in student debt relief to nearly 5 million Americans. This can be seen from multiple perspectives: Either that Biden is spending billions of tax dollars on student debt while ‘ignoring’ more pressing matters, or that he is dedicating just a fraction of the $5-6 trillion spent by the government each year towards funding the higher education of the future of the U.S. In a poll conducted on voter attitudes towards student debt relief, 70% of voters (67 % of these have already paid off their loans) believed that the government should take action in relieving student debt. Allocating government funding towards student debt relief seems to be favorable in the eyes of a majority of voters, regardless of party.
