There’s been a recent trend of Tiktoks talking about how dangerous and harmful Lasik eye surgery is, but are these claims backed up by science? Most sources say that Lasik surgery is actually fairly safe, as complications are rare. These complications include side effects such as dry eyes and some visual issues, although these symptoms typically resolve themselves after a couple weeks/months. Contrary to what some Tiktokers may believe, Lasik is actually one of the safest medical procedures out there, and both short term and long term side effects are very uncommon. So where is all this misinformation coming from? Well, it seems to have partially been inspired by the suicide of Jess Starr, a news anchor who suffered from Lasik side effects until she took her own life. While this event is no doubt tragic, it’s important to remember that this doesn’t take away from the fact that Lasik surgery is fundamentally supported by science. One problem that may arise after Lasik surgery is the expectations that a patient has, especially in terms of recovery. If a patient is expecting perfect, overnight change, they may be let down and feel negatively about the operation. Overall, studies say that Lasik surgery is safe, although some people clearly face life-damaging effects. Since this surgery is an elective (meaning it isn’t needed to save the patient’s life), it’s wise to do lots of research and figure out whether the procedure is right for you before getting the permanent surgery done.
